Clear vision is something many of us take for granted. Yet for millions of people in underserved communities, simple age-related vision loss or minor refractive errors can turn daily life into a constant struggle.

Without access to basic eye care, adults lose their ability to read, work, and earn a living, while artisans and elders find themselves reliant on others for everyday tasks.

To address this overlooked barrier, the Dako Foundation recently carried out a free vision screening and distribution outreach, providing custom reading glasses to hundreds of community members in need.

The Invisible Barrier: Why Clear Vision Matters

Uncorrected vision impairment isn’t just a health concern—it is an economic and social issue. As people age, presbyopia (gradual loss of near vision) naturally occurs. In remote or low-income areas, the lack of affordable optometry services means people simply live with blurred vision for years.

  • Loss of Livelihood: Tailors, carpenters, farmers, and market traders struggle to perform detailed tasks, threatening their family’s primary source of income.
  • Loss of Independence: Elders lose the simple joy and dignity of reading holy scriptures, personal mail, or community news independently.
  • Economic Strain: Families are forced to spend limited resources on travel to urban clinics, where prescription eyewear remains prohibitively expensive.

Transforming Lives, One Pair of Glasses at a Time

During our outreach, certified eye care professionals conducted comprehensive vision screenings to ensure every individual received the exact lens strength required for their needs.

The immediate transformation was heartwarming. Within seconds of putting on their new glasses, beneficiaries went from squinting at test charts to clearly reading text on a page with bright smiles.

“I used to struggle so much to sew clothes, and my hands would hurt from taking so long on a single design. With these glasses from Dako Foundation, everything is crystal clear again. I can get back to my work with confidence.”
